Mission statement
Young Friends of GMHC is a diverse group of young professionals dedicated to helping GMHC end the AIDS epidemic. Through volunteering with and for GMHC’s clients, engaging in the agency’s policy and activism efforts, working especially with young people and long-term survivors, and supporting GMHC’s events, Young Friends of GMHC is fostering the next generation of leaders in the fight against HIV and AIDS.

Our story
35 years ago, GMHC began when five courageous activists answered the call to gather with Larry Kramer in his living room. That meeting helped launch GMHC, the world’s first AIDS service organization.

More than three decades later, five community leaders met with the nephew of GMHC’s first paid executive director, Rodger McFarlane, in his living room to answer a similar kind of call: to foster a nw generation of activists and philanthropists to end AIDS. Recognizing the changing nature of the epidemic, Young Friends of GMHC pledges to create a community of like-minded yet diverse young professionals to come together to address the realities of AIDS in 2017. Facing a challenging national political climate, no HIV cure or vaccine, a growing long-term survivor population, and rising numbers of young gay men—particularly young gay men of color—contracting HIV, Young Friends of GMHC will work with GMHC’s board, staff, clients, and other donors to help fulfill the agency’s mission. Most of all, we hope to make a difference while forging friendships and professional connections with other group members.
